Here are some answers to questions about planning your perfect maternity photo shoot!
When is the right time to schedule a maternity shoot?
The first question you might be having is about when the best time to schedule a shoot would be. For maternity photography, people typically want to feature the baby bump closer to the end of their pregnancy, when the belly is full and round. The best time for these pictures would be during the 7th and 8th month. It's important not to schedule it too late, so that mother is uncomfortable or you miss the shoot entirely due to an early birth. With this in mind, it's good to start looking for a photographer at least in the 6th month of pregnancy to ensure a shoot date can be booked within that window. If it takes time to find a photographer that's right for you, we wanna make sure there's enough time to have everything sorted out.
Where is the best place for a maternity shoot?
This question can have different answers for different expectant mothers and can come down to preference, but typically the best place for maternity shoots are in a studio. Since maternity photography is focused solely on the mother and baby bump, photographing in a studio offers the most options for different maternity photography styles and is a comfortable private atmosphere with little physical activity. Though locations can still be an option, in-studio is a more popular place for maternity shoots, especially if the mother would like to reveal the stomach or body at all. This can then be done in a private environment that also allows for lighting and background options that will focus attention on the mother.
How to plan for a maternity shoot?
The best way to start planning a maternity shoot is to create a vision board or Pinterest board with ideas you like and examples of photos similar to what you want to create. Having a solid idea of your expectations will help your photographer be able to create those images. When looking to book with a photographer, make sure to communicate clearly all of those expectations and share your vision board. If anything is needed for your shoot, check that the photographer can provide it or that what they have is a suitable substitute. Once the creative ideas are planned for the shoot, lock down a date in the sweet spot between 7-8 months of pregnancy and come ready for your shoot!
